The rim snapped off. You can see two of the spokes still attached to the column when he gets out.

Nah it was just the rim of the steering wheel that came off, you can still see two of the spokes attached to the hub. Safe t y feature!

Also if you pause it at :12 you can see he still has both hands on it with no spokes in the center!
